Each year, the Heavenly team facilitates the “Compost Your Combustibles” program in an effort to prevent forest fires in our local community. This yearly collection event encourages all Nevada residents to dispose of slash and pine needles in receptacles on-site at Heavenly provided free of charge by Vail Resorts.
On average, we collect over 400 tons of combustible materials – much of which is turned into feedstock for local farm animals through a partnership with the Full Circle Compost facility in Minden, Nevada.
We also use this collected material on our own mountain. In 2014, we used a large portion – over 100 tons – on Heavenly’s slopes for soil cover and erosion control. An additional 600 linear feet of collected pine needle wattles was used for erosion control with new construction projects. This method was so successful that we have developed a new system for re-purposing the pine needle wattles year-round for temporary and permanent use.
